专利说明:
FASTENING DEVICE FOR BATTERIES, ESPECIALLY BATTERIES FORVEHICLES TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to a fastening device forvehicle batteries, primarily for fastening of batteries on a heavy commercial vehicle, such as in a truck or in a bus. Theinvention particularly relates to fastening devices used forfixation of at least two batteries. The invention also relates to a vehicle provided with such a fastening device. BACKGROUND ART Passenger cars as well as heavy commercial vehicles, liketrucks and/or buses, are normally equipped with one or morebatteries for providing electrical energy to the electricalsystem of the vehicle. Batteries for trucks and buses arecomparatively large and heavy and as especially trucks oftenare driven on uneven/rough roads/grounds this will causehigh/strong vibrations in the vehicle. High vibration levelsexert considerable stresses on the fastening devices and inturn to the batteries and eventually this may displace and/ordamage the batteries. The batteries may come loose and changeposition resulting in severe damages to the batteries housing. It is therefore very important that the batteries are keptfirmly in their intended positions, e.g. in the battery box.Normally the batteries are lifted to their intended positionsin the battery box where after at least one upper fasteningelement, preferably some form of yoke, is installed by a screw joint upon the batteries, exerting a vertical pressure force against at least a part of the batteries upper surfaces or its edges or a combination thereof. One problem with such an installation is that the verticalpressure exerted by the upper fastening element has to providea substantial force on the upper part of the batteries to keepthe batteries in place regardless of high vibrations that mayoccur when the vehicle is driven in rough conditions/bad roads. After some time a deformation or relaxation still may occur inthe batteries outer housings, often manufactured by some kind of plastic material. This deformation, or relaxation, results in that the pressure from the fastening element, against thebattery housing, may decrease by time permitting the batteryto begin to move in different directions and as a result eventually to be displaced from its intended position. And ifthe pressure force of the fastening element against thebattery is reduced too much, in relation to the frictionbetween the bottom of the battery housing and the base plateof the battery box, in which the battery is located, mayresult in that the battery will be loose, displaced and damaged. These problems are well known and different solutions haveearlier been proposed to solve these problems. The patent document US5040627 (Swayze) describes a mountingdevice for a pair of batteries utilizing an upper centrallylocated fastening element. The vertical clamping force fromthe fastening element is arranged to keep the batteries inplace but exerts at the same time a large force on the batteryhousing. The design of the fastening element, having a cross- shaped configuration defining four arms gripping into the batteries all four edges, is therefore intended to spread the force on the upper surface of the battery in order not todamage the housing of the battery. No fixation is done at thelower parts of the batteries and the clamping force will bedecreased by time due to the relaxation effect in the plastichousing. The patent document US4l28l94 (Hammond et al.) describes amounting device in the form of a frame element made of fourparallel angle members engaging with the upper sides/edges ofthe batteries, placed side by side in a battery box. The endsof the angle members are connected by flat end plates andbolts are located between the batteries, from the bottom support of the battery box up to, and mounted to, the upper frame element. No fixation is done at the lower parts of thebatteries. The bolts have therefore to be tightly installed. If the bolts are tightened too much/hard the housing of thebatteries may be damaged. No fixation/support is done at thelower parts of the battery housings and the clamping forcewill eventually be decreased by time due to the relaxationeffect in the plastic housings. The Japanese patent document JPHO83299l7 (Kazunori/Toyota)describes a mounting device primarily intended for a passengercar. The design of the fastening device allows one battery ata time to be removed while the other will still be fixed. Thebatteries are positioned slightly offset in relation to eachother and the vertical pressure to each battery is focused toa small area of the upper side of each battery. This fasteningdevice may keep the batteries in place mainly in onedirection, across the batteries, but in the other directionsthe fastening device will not successfully keep the batteriesin place, if/when they will be exposed to large vibrations and due to the relaxation effect in the plastic housings. Other solutions to this problem exist in the market but noneof these prior art devices illustrates a fastening device thatkeeps large batteries safe in place when exposed to heavy vibrations. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION One object of the present invention is to solve the abovementioned problems and to provide a simple fastening devicekeeping the batteries in their intended positions withoutexerting a too large vertical force on the upper surface of the battery housing. Another object of the invention is to provide a fasteningdevice that does not need extensive redesign of the battery box. Another object of the invention is to provide a fasteningdevice that allows batteries with different sizes to be usedin the battery box with just changing the lower fastening element to one adapted to the new size to the batteries. Another object of the invention is to create a fasteningdevice that does not comprise a number of space consuming orheavy components and should not need extra space in the vehicle.A further object of the invention is to create a fasteningdevice that offers precise control over primarily the location of two or more batteries in a vehicle. A further object of the invention is that installation of the fastening device should be very easy and that it should be easy to service or change the batteries. These and further objects and advantages is achieved by theinvention by creating a fastening device designed in accordance with the features recited in claim l. The invention relates to a system for fastening of batteries on a vehicle and the fastening device principally comprises ofan upper fastening element, a lower fastening element and avertical connecting element arranged between the upper andlower fastening elements. The vertical connecting element, e.g. one or more stud or pin screws/bolts, are primarilyarranged in the narrow space between two batteries positionedside by side and connects the upper fastening element(s) tothe lower fastening element as well as to the base plate ofthe battery box. The upper fastening element comprises of at least one, prefer- ably two, overlaying yokes of metal, each located across bothbatteries and reaching from the outer edge of the firstbattery to the opposed outer edge of the second battery. Theouter edges of each fastening element are folded downwardsforming a grip, allowing the fastening elements to grip overthe outer edges of the batteries, in order to avoid thebatteries to slide sideward. If one of the batteries willbegin to slide in a direction out from the other battery, thefirst battery thereby will try to pull along the secondbattery through the overlaying yoke(s). This motion will bestopped by means of the lower fastening element that isremovable fixed to the base plate and both batteries will stayin their intended positions. The lower fastening element is arranged with T-formed ends which extend around the batteries lower corners thereby preventing the batteries from sliding intheir longitudinal direction, in the right angle compared tothe positioning of the overlaying yokes. At least two connecting element(s) are installed for eachlower fastening element, if more than one is used. Thevertical connecting element(s) may be formed as pin screws/-bolts designed with a conical part at the lower end by whichit is centered in the mounting holes of the lower fasteningelement and screwed to the base plate of the battery box. Thelower fastening element is thereby safely fixed in alldirections. Thus the pin bolts connects the upper fastening elements, by a further upper screw joint, to the lower fastening element. The batteries are than fixed in alldirections, both in all horizontal directions but also in the vertical direction. The fastening device according to the invention therebyreduces the need for a high clamping force on the batteriesupper housing part which in turn reduces the stress on thebatteries housing and the fastening device will still keep thebatteries safely in their intended positions. In the battery box, underneath the batteries, a rubber matcould be located. This rubber mat is fixed by the pin screws, increasing the friction between the base plate and the batteries and is designed with heals in order to prevent the batteries from sliding horizontally. The main advantages of the inventive solution are that thefastening device comprises only a few easy to install anddismantle components and by its design still will keep thebatteries safe in their intended positions in spite of excessive shakings or vibrations in the vehicle. A further advantage is that batteries with different sizes may be usedin the vehicle and placed in the battery box with just chang-ing the lower fastening element to one adapted in length to the size to the new batteries. Further features and advantages of the invention will beapparent from the following, more detailed description of the invention and the accompanying drawings and the claims.
